Shadwell Estate was purchased in 1984 as a base for the bloodstock interests of the late Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with the Nunnery purchased 2 years later, developed by Sheikh Hamdan into the Nunnery Stud, and standing stallions for the first time in 1989.
Since then, the stallion barn has been graced by a number of greats including Nashwan and Green Desert. The stud now boasts three exciting young stallions, headed by Group 1 winner Mohaather. The Estate also hosts a significant pre-training and rehabilitation facility at Snarehill running state of the art equipment to ensure potential champions are prepared for racing in every way, including aqua treadmills, saltwater spas, all-weather gallops and a swimming pool.
The Shadwell Estate comprises 6,225 acres, circa 1,100 acres of which are dedicated to the equestrian operations. The remaining Estate encompasses a significant area of forestry, game land, leased agricultural land and conservation land, including the Brettenham Heath Nature Reserve. There is a strong focus on the conservation of Stone and Common Curlew in partnership with Natural England. Further to the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan in 2021, Shadwell is now going through a significant restructure of the business, resulting in a wholescale review and refocus of all its assets.
This visit is by kind permission of the staff at Shadwell.
