CLA Next Generation Annual Conference and Dinner 2024

The CLA Next Generation Conference and Dinner returns for its second year on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 May 2024. Hosted at the Whitbourne Estate by kind permission of the Evans family, this diversified family business consists of 350 acres of productive forestry, an organic home farm, a wedding and events venue, residential property, two tenant farms and a care farm charity.

Taking place at the estate’s events space, Crumplebury, managed by Artemis, the conference and dinner is an opportunity to meet up with other young entrepreneurs and land managers and discuss personal and future business development as well as current and future opportunities and challenges. This event is for those who have recently taken over the family business or will do so shortly and will count towards your Continuing Professional Development.

We will begin on the evening of Wednesday 1 May with a drinks' reception at Crumplebury followed by a two-course dinner; guests will be joined by the CLA President Victoria Vyvyan, and enjoy an after-dinner address from guest speaker Phil Vickery MBE DL, Rugby Union legend and Celebrity MasterChef winner, who will be talking about the importance of farming, the countryside and his passion for inspiring people to eat well. Phil is the son of a farmer and his brother still runs the family farm in Cornwall. He is also patron of The Country Food Trust charity, which produces food and donates it to people in need.
Carriages at 11pm.

On the second day you will hear from a variety of speakers including experts from the CLA and event partner Knight Frank. There will be technical updates plus a wider inspiring and thought-provoking programme on building the right mindset and tackling changing times. Joe Evans, who has been managing the Whitbourne Estate since 2012, will give an honest insight into his experiences of running and developing enterprises on the Estate, and the successes and pitfalls along the way.

Following a two-course lunch there will be tours of the Estate’s enterprises:

· Whitbourne Hall, where you will learn of an alternative approach to preserving a heritage asset as part of an estate;
· Longlands Care Farm, founded in 2009 by Joe’s mother Julia to reengage young people disconnected from mainstream education through a therapeutic, real farm setting;
· a section of the estate’s 350 acres of diverse woodland, to see an area which has benefited from recent forestry management through Forestry Commission grant funding;
· as the estate is predominantly organic permanent pasture, we will also hear from share farmer Tim Roberts who will talk of farming on the Estate, how the partnership works, and his experiences of breeding and showing a pedigree herd.
