CLA South East: Kent Branch Summer Event and AGM 2025

Join us for the 2025 Kent AGM and Annual Summer Social

The Montreal Estate has been in existence for over 250 years. Starting In 1717 when General Jeffrey Amherst (commander-in-chief of British forces in North America during the Seven Years’ War) was born in one of our Estate properties – Brook Place.  The Amherst family were the owners of The Montreal Estate right up until 1926 when the whole Estate was sold to Julius Runge, a businessman. Sadly, Runge died prematurely, and the size of the death duties then meant the majority of the Estate was put up for sale in 1938. Between 1952 and 1963 a housing development promoted by a local builder, William Fasey, was built on c. 100 acres of Estate land to create Montreal Park. Today, all that remains to remind us of Lord Amherst is an octagonal gatehouse, a derelict stone summerhouse and a large obelisk. The subsequent owner, Mr Jack Jacques was predominantly interested in developing the Estate’s Woodland and owned the Estate for almost 60 years, dying aged 93 in 2009.

In 2012 The Estate was Purchased by Mr and Mrs Green, Who have been running the estate ever since.  The family have made significant improvements, enhancing the aesthetics, efficiency, and sustainability of the Estate. The rural business includes arable farming, forestry, conservation, livestock production, conference and events facilities, renewable energy and residential properties.

Some of these improvements include old Estate Hub, into 11,000ft of office facilities. Repurposed dairy farm buildings converted into new modern facilities, including state of the art offices and conference rooms, staff welfare facilities and 15,8332ft of modern farm machinery buildings. There has also been significant investment in forestry, machinery and ways of working, to ensure the Estate is operating both efficiently, sustainably and safely.

The visit to the Estate will showcase much of the investment that the Green family have made since they took ownership of the Estate.  Weather permitting, there will be the opportunity to showcase the infrastructure investment in the woodland and the Business Centre that has been created through the conversion of various old buildings in AONB followed by lunch and an opportunity to discuss all that you have seen with other members.
