CLA Midlands: Visit to Hartlebury Castle and Worcestershire AGM

The Midlands team are delighted to invite you to a bespoke visit to Hartlebury Castle and the Worcestershire AGM.

Hartlebury Castle Trust, grew from a small movement of local villagers, determined to protect the Castle when it was put up for sale by the Church of England in 2007. The charity successful fundraised to raise awareness of Hartlebury Castle, securing funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund providing £5 million to restore the building and begin sharing its wonderful stories.

Hartlebury Castle originated as a castle, and has since had varied roles as a manor house, prison, hospital, and sanctuary. It is a captivating historic house, telling the remarkable deeds of bishops who shaped national history, to the everyday lives of servants who worked hard within its walls. Today it stands as a timeless testament to over a millennium of history, bearing witness to the stories of 112 bishops and countless others who have called it home.

The day will begin with the AGM in the Saloon and an update on the latest issues affecting members by CLA Vice President Joe Evans, followed by an introduction to the library and how it came to Hartlebury Castle by volunteer librarians.

You will enjoy tours of:

  • The exclusive and unique Hurd library, offering a glimpse into the fascinating life of Bishop Hurd, and the book collections of an 18th century gentlemen. Find out about the library's oldest book, and the gifts from King George III complete with his signature.
  • The State Rooms to discover the history of the Castle as you’re taken through the Bishop’s Palace, and hear about its most intriguing bishops. Three bishops became saints, two were burnt at the stake, and one became Pope Clement VII who refused Henry VIII his first divorce.
  • The grounds and gardenincluding the Queen Elizabeth I Walk, 300 year old mulberry trees and magnolia tree planted by Queen Elizabeth II. The grounds and parkland are Grade II listed and offer a fascinating history alongside scenic views of the Castle.
