We are extremely fortunate to be invited to Longleat Estate to hear from their forestry experts and explore the grounds of Longleat Forest by kind permission of Lord Bath and generous support from Savills.
Throughout the morning we will gain an understanding of Longleat’s long term management plan for the forest, woodland grants and incentives, nature conservation and management of habitats for the native wildlife and forestry asks of government. We will then have a light lunch followed by a guided tour of the firewood yard and Longleat’s continuous cover forest.
Longleat Forest is a 1294 hectare commercial continuous cover forestry plantation. Having coined the phrase 'continuous cover forestry' in 1978, Longleat manage their woodlands with an uneven aged and mixed species structure. As members of the Continuous Cover Forestry Group Longleat promote this practice nationally, and have a very strong pedigree with this silvicultural practice. The forest is part of the Cranbourne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and contains 210 hectares which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), this is due to lichens and dormice fringed by the historic 'Capability Brown' landscape and parkland. Longleat Forestry supply hardwood, softwood and kiln dried logs for the end user which is harvested and produced from the commercial continuous cover forestry plantation.
