CLA East: Essex Summer Visit and AGM 2026

Experience the charm, heritage and natural beauty of The Terling Estate, a remarkable family owned estate near Chelmsford, managed by Lord Rayleigh's Farms.

This visit offers a rare opportunity to explore a working estate that continues to be guided by Lord Rayleigh's Farms longstanding commitment to responsible farming and countryside preservation. With origins dating back to the early 18th century, you will see how the estate has grown into a thriving centre of mixed arable and livestock farming, spanning more than 8,500 acres of in-hand farmland plus an additional 1,500 acres managed under contract agreements.

During your walking tour, you will hear about the history of the family and how the 3rd Lord Rayleigh turned an old stable hay loft into a pioneering private laboratory where he discovered argon and advanced key principles in wave physics.

You will learn how the estate has worked with the community on the redevelopment of the village and retail amenities, and how the estate’s significant portfolio of residential and commercial properties contribute to the vibrant rural economy that surrounds Terling.

EDF Energy will talk you through their development of the 500MW Longfield Solar Farm, the largest consented scheme in the UK, located on the Estate”
