We are delighted to invite our Cornwall Branch members to this year’s Cornwall AGM at Trevince, by kind permission of Richard & Trish Stone.
Trevince was first mentioned in 1281 and the family has been here since then. Its centre lies in the World Heritage Site in the heart of Gwennap, once known as the Copper Kingdom and the richest square mile in the Old World. The house dates from the late 17th century with the front rebuilt for Richard’s great great grandfather in the 1860s. The architect was James Piers St Aubyn who designed several Cornish country houses and restored many churches. The builders were the Olver family, a branch of whom were farming tenants at the time and have remained so ever since. This sense of continuity from the distant past and always looking to the future is a strong thread here.
The Estate is largely a traditional rural estate with a mixture of residential and agricultural lettings, some renewables and some commercial lettings over three main blocks. Home area, Ladock and St Stephen in Clay Country. The portfolio consists of a high proportion of multi -generational tenants who help to keep the Estate buoyant in turbulent times.
Trish and Richard Stone were archaeologists for many years before taking over from Richard’s parents, who still live on the estate. The whole family recognize and embrace the need for constant change and also its inevitability. Current projects include a housing development in a local village, reopening the gardens, managing the woodlands, a major solar development and the development of commercial lettings in old estate buildings. These interests, along with trying to keep up with changing regulation, ensure that there’s always something interesting happening here from day to day.
