Join us on Friday 15th May for a summer drinks reception at The Lyth, home to Richard and Susan Jebb and the birthplace of Eglantyne and Dorothy Jebb, founders of Save the Children.
The house was originally built in 1819 for Abednego Mathew, a tea planter who had recently returned home after a career in the West Indies and married the daughter of a wealthy Liverpool sugar merchant. The architect is unknown but it is surely no coincidence that the house has a hint of the tropics about it, with a large verandah on 3 sides. Now Grade II* listed, the decorations in the principal rooms include a set of Flemish tapestries and hand blocked French wallpaper from the early 18C. After Abednego’s death in 1839 his heir needed to raise cash to clear his debts and sold the house and contents to Richard George Jebb who had just retired as agent to the Trevors of Brynkinalt, and the house has remained in the Jebb family ever since.
You will hear a brief talk on the history of the house and its occupiers from Richard and you will be welcome to wander through the ground floor rooms.
Guests will enjoy drinks and canapés in the delightful setting of The Lyth both inside the house and - weather permitting, outside in the gardens.
A donation will be made to Save the Children.
