The Midlands team are delighted to invite you to a bespoke visit to Madresfield and the Worcestershire AGM.
Madresfield Court and Estate is situated in beautiful, rural Worcestershire and nestles between the Malvern Hills and the River Severn. It has been home to the Lygon family for over 900 years and has never been bought or sold since records began in 1120. The current occupants are Lucy, Jonathan Chenevix-Trench and their family; Lucy is the great niece of the last Earl, and she and her family are the 28th and 29th generations of the family to live at Madresfield. On taking over the estate, they made the decision to bring 3 tenant farms in hand , and farm the land in house for the first time in the estate’s history. Their goal is to nurture the land, improve the soil, cherish the local ecology and wildlife.
The day will begin with the AGM in the Lygon Room and an update on the latest issues affecting members by CLA President, Gavin Lane, followed by an introduction to Madresfield by Lucy or Jonathan Chenevix-Trench.
The day will include guided tours of Madresfield Court, and the Estate.
The house tour will offer you a rare chance to experience one of Britain’s most remarkable moated houses. During your guided visit, you will explore the decorative Staircase Hall, C. R. Ashbee’s celebrated Arts and Crafts Library, and the exquisite family Chapel, as well as exceptional collections of furniture, paintings, porcelain, and objets d’art gathered across generations. Widely regarded as one of the most complete and beautiful expressions of the Arts and Crafts movement, Madresfield has inspired figures from Edward Elgar to Evelyn Waugh. It remains, above all, a lived-in family home. You will have time to explore the gardens at your own leisure.
On the farming tour you will see how Madresfield is approaching managing the farm, interspersing animals on pasture lays with cereals and beans. Madresfield try to work with nature rather than against it, respecting the animals, the crops, and incorporating as much diversity as possible. You will learn about their grass-fed livestock and herd management, from birth right through to processing in their own butchery to ultimately end up being served in our own restaurant.
There will be a two-course lunch before reverse tours in the afternoon.
Please note those with mobility issues may not be able to go upstairs in house tour.
Please ensure suitable footwear and clothing is worn as the tours will take place outdoors.PROGRAMME 9.30am Arrival and refreshments
