CLA North: Building Resilient Rural Businesses with the Next Generation

Farmers, landowners and land managers across the country are facing rapid change, from ever-evolving policies and environmental pressures to navigating the complexity of succession. This spring, the CLA invites you to Ingleborough Estate for a practical, honest and forward looking event designed to help you approach that change with confidence.

The day begins with real stories of succession and leadership. Whether you’re stepping into responsibility on a family farm, managing a diversified rural business or planning for the next generation, this session explores the human side of transition: unexpected change, family dynamics, and the courage required to learn on the job.

We then move into the skills and structures that support effective land management. From bringing experience in from other sectors to choosing the right mix of advisers, staff, and partners, this session helps you identify where your time adds the most value, and where others can help you go further.

Attendees will also hear how the Ingleborough Estate has strengthened its financial resilience, from the café renovation to land use planning offering an honest insight into the estate’s development so far.

This will be followed by lunch and the event will conclude with an informal walk to see some of the projects in context.

Whether you manage a farm, a smallholding, a diversified rural enterprise or a traditional estate, this event offers practical insight, shared experience, and inspiration for the future.

The agenda for the day will be as follows:
10:00am – Registration in The Reginald Farrer room with tea and coffee
10:30am – Talks and workshops
12:30pm – Lunch
1:30pm – Tour
14:15pm - Event concludes

For those who would like to explore further, there is the option to continue on to the cave on a self-guided basis. This offers an opportunity to see more of the landscape and wider projects in action at your own pace. Please note that the walk up to the cave is just over 1 mile, followed by approximately 0.6 miles underground. The route is accessible, although there are two short stooping sections within the cave. The underground temperature is a cool 8°C year-round, so we recommend bringing warm layers and suitable footwear. Discounted cave tickets will be available to attendees at £12.00 (standard on-the-day price is £19.50), including free entry to the nature trail. You are welcome to indicate your interest in advance by contacting north@cla.org.uk. Tickets can also be purchased on the day, but to access the discounted rate, please ensure your name is provided at the ticket desk.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Farrer family for kindly hosting this event.
