CLA East Farm Walk - Pastures Farm, Caxton

Nuffield Scholar and farmer Tom Pearson will take you on a tour of his home farm in Caxton where you will learn about the team's regenerative farming, agroforestry and composting, as well as their research and trials.

Tom combines his work as a regenerative arable farmer with a background as a medical doctor and public health specialist. He is passionate about championing the importance of nutrition and health - such as local food access, community engagement and food education. He has been involved in the recently published Vitagri white paper looking at farming systems and nutrition.

During this visit Tom and the team will discuss their work using Johnson Su bioreactors compost extracts to deliver a living microbial inoculant at drilling. This is part of the combination of activities aiming to improve soil health, plant nutrient uptake, and ultimately carbon sequestration and climate resilient soils. They will also discuss their ADOPT (InnovateUK/DEFRA funded) trial looking at 'reactive agronomy', foliar nitrogen applications and nitrogen use efficiency.

You will also see Adrienne Gordon’s Sweet Pea Market Garden, which featured in the documentary Six Inches of Soil. The garden uses around three acres of land for producing salads, microgreens, edible flowers, and seasonal fruit and vegetables which are sold at local farmers’ markets and farm shops.

Additionally, you will hear how the agroforestry project at Pastures Farm currently involves dessert apple trees and how walnut and hazelnut trees are being considered.

A supper, showcasing local produce, and refreshments are included in the ticket price.
