CLA Webinar: Devolution and the Rural Economy

This webinar is open for all to attend. It is relevant to England only.

Join Charles Trotman, CLA Senior Policy Adviser, and a representative from Britain’s Leading Edge (BLE), to learn more about the intricacies of devolution and the Government objective of making the best use of available resource. This webinar will be supported by Britain’s Leading Edge (BLE), an organisation that represents rural local authorities that have no major urban base.

During the passage of the Devolution Bill through Parliament, major amendments were agreed that changes the thrust of the new legislation. This webinar will look at these changes and how CLA lobbying played an vital role in getting the government to recognise the importance of rural affairs. The webinar will also highlight the value of engaging with local government to ensure local decision-making does not adversely impact members on issues such as planning and housing.

The changes to local government are vitally important to the provision of public services as well as recognising the need for greater transparency in local decision making. It will mean new policy making processes that will allow rural communities and rural businesses the opportunity to take a more direct and active part in ensuring that local challenges are better resolved through local decisions.

Devolution will change local government by giving local communities a far better opportunity to make the decisions that impact their everyday lives. That includes all those who live and work in the countryside.

Key areas to be covered:

  • Making best use of available resource.
  • Various stages of devolution currently taking place in England and the changes to local government.
  • What the CLA intends to do next to influence the shape and direction of local policy making, particularly how strategic authorities will now provide the long term direction of planning in England.
  • How the CLA will be promote its “rural devolution model” to ensure rural interests are no longer disregarded.
  • Hear about the ongoing work of BLE, its objectives and how it lobbies to promote the growth of everything that is rural.

This webinar is open to CLA members and non-members. The recording will be available to on our CLA webpages after it has taken place.
