Goats have always fascinated Farmer’s daughter, Lizzie Dyer; travels in Northern India as a teenager observing goat farmers fuelled this fascination. She was a keen foodie and wanted to produce kid goat meat. There is no blueprint in the UK for Kid Meat production. As a dairy farmer’s daughter Lizzie has always been aware of the dilemma over the fate of the male counterpart from a dairy enterprise and billy kids are a by-product from the goat dairy industry and are euthanised at birth. Lizzie and her partner Jamie (whose background is in catering) are creating an entirely new enterprise and developing their own systems that best suit their Billies and their ethos.
The kid meat is traceable; they have raised all the meat they sell so they know exactly how it has been reared from start to finish. All billy kids are sourced from one High Health Status Dairy Unit and reared in as natural an environment as possible on a grass based diet. They farm using sustainable practices, conscious of their footprint in all respects – their aim is to put back more than they take out of the environment.
CLA members will be split into groups and have a farm walk and talk, a cooking demonstration with Lizzie followed by lunch with samples of kid meat.
