South East Wales AGM & Visit 2021

We are delighted that our south east Wales AGM this year will be at Glanusk Estate by kind permission of Harry Legge Bourke and family. The family used to live in the old mansion in the summer and then move into the Dower House, Penmyarth in the winter.

The mansion was demolished in 1952 after serious fire damage during the Army’s requisition of the house during the 2nd World War and the family now live in the Dower House.

The rest of the Estate is still intact and consists of 400 acres of private parkland, 800 acres of forestry, 3,500 acres of lowland and hill farms, the Park and forestry, 16,000 acres of Common Land hills and 5 miles of the River Usk. There are many historic buildings remaining, including the Tower Bridge, over the River Usk, ancient Celtic standing stones, the private chapel, farm buildings and stables, all either Grade II listed or Grade II starred.

The Estate is renowned for its trees which include over 200 different species and cultivars of Quercus (oak).

We will meet at the house in the Rod Room where Harry Legge Bourke will talk about the history of the estate and how he has diversified to ensure the sustainability for future generations. Tourism, weddings, field sports, Glanusk gin and malt whisky are some of the businesses run from the estate.

Following the AGM Harry will lead a tour of the gardens and oak walk.
The Oak ‘Tour’ takes in the ‘Woodland Walk’ that connects the Oak Avenue to the ‘Riverside Oaks. A walk of approximately 1.5kms on reasonably flat ground with a bit of a steep track leading down to the river and the riverside oaks. Again from the carpark along the river is approximately 1.5 kms as well taking in the Oaks and River Usk views. Good walking shoes/boots/wellies are recommended for walking the ‘Woodland Walk’ and ‘River Walk’ as there are natural springs and wet patches all over the place even in summer.
Suitable footwear and waterproof recommended according to weather on the day.
