We are extremely fortunate to be able to hold the 2022 Devon AGM at Clovelly by kind permission of John Rous.
Venue
Originally the estate was owned by William the Conqueror, King of England, gifted to his wife and then had many royal associations until 1242 when first acquired by the Giffard family. Until the middle of the 19th century Clovelly was unknown to the outside world. It was partly as a result of Charles Kingsley’s ‘Westward Ho!’, set in and around the village, that visitors began to come.
The Estate comprises agricultural land, ancient woodland and softwood plantations, residential properties in Higher Clovelly the fishing village and harbour.
A narrow, cobbled street leads down the cliff past fisherman’s cottages to a 14th century harbour made of enormous boulders. Many thousand come as day visitors. To accommodate them a large car park was built in 1924, and in 1988 a visitor centre was added, to provide facilities and commercial opportunities, without spoiling the charm of the village.
