Rothamsted Research is home to the oldest continuing agricultural field experiments in the world. Seven of these long-term experiments continue today and provide an invaluable resource for scientists.
During this visit, you will see the Rothamsted Insectary, a specialised facility that maintains a range of both indigenous and exotic insect species. There will be a tour of the Broadbalk experiment, which is testing the effect of different organic manures and inorganic fertilisers on the yield of winter wheat. You will also visit the Park Grass experiment, the oldest experiment on permanent grassland in the world.
There will be an opportunity to see the Sample Archives, which has retained samples of crops, soils,
fertilisers and manures from long-term experiments dating back to the 1840s. Successive generations of scientists at Rothamsted have continued to add to the collection, and the resulting archive is of immense scientific value.
After lunch there will be the opportunity for a further walking tour of the farm.
