CLA Cymru & Midlands: Women's Network visit to Powis Castle & Tour

Please contact regional office to book - limited space
Built in the 13th century as a medieval fortress, the castle and garden you see today reflects the changing ambitions and visions of the Herbert family, who occupied the castle from the 1570s.

Furnished with decorative fabrics, world-class paintings, furniture, tapestries, and the unique Clive Collection of South Asian objects, the interior reflects the Elizabethan period through to the Edwardian period.  Amassed during the British colonisation of India, these objects arrived in Wales and came to Powis Castle during the early 19th century. The museum houses more than 1000 items from South and East Asia, dating from about 1600 to the 1830s. It includes ivories, textiles, statues of Hindu gods, ornamental silver and gold, weapons and ceremonial armour.

With views across the Severn Valley, the world-famous garden retains many of its original features including 17th century Italianate terraces lined with vibrant herbaceous borders and 30ft clipped yew trees, an Edwardian formal garden with century-old apple trees and rose beds, and a peaceful woodland area.

A joint Women’s Network event with the Midlands and an opportunity to network with fellow members from a different region. The day begin with welcome refreshments and Welsh cake. This will be followed by a history talk on the castle and it’s magnificent interiors, the Clive collection and beautiful gardens, all available to view and enjoy plus the exhibition of textiles from Kaffe Fassett, international textile artist.

We will be joined by a castle family connection Viscount Clive who is an active CLA Cymru member and sits on many of the committees involved in the CLA work.

Members are welcome to enjoy the beautiful gardens for the afternoon and bring your own picnic to relax in the outstanding surroundings of the castle. There is also a cafe on site where you can buy food.

For any queries please contact either Natalie in the Midlands Office on 07753 574676 or Sarah in the Wales Office on 07817 128277.
