The Bassmead Estate is more than 700 years old, with the Grade II listed manor house and farm buildings sitting within a medieval moat enclosure. Bassmead has been owned by the Squire family since 1845 and your hosts on this day, Richard and Cordelia Squire, are the seventh generation to call the farm home.
Bassmead has undergone several transformations under the Squire tenure. Originally purchased to grow herbs and lavender for Sir Peter Squire, apothecary to Queen Victoria, the land has been cultivated for arable crops and under Richard and Cordelia’s expertise, it has become an example of diversification.
As well as adopting new innovative farming technology, Bassmead has become a successful destination wedding venue following re-development of the medieval moated site 11 years ago. The Squires were also the first people to build a round barrow in England for 3,500 years.
A barrow is one of the oldest funeral traditions in Britain. Built using natural stone and set in idyllic countryside, the barrow provides a beautiful setting for a service and consists of niches for the placement of urns of ashes.
During a coach tour of the Bassmead Estate you will see the on-site solar farm, be given a tour of the barrow and wedding venue, followed by a delicious dinner in the beautiful Bassmead Manor barns. Visit by kind permission of the Squire family.
