CLA South West: Tour of Plymouth University’s Marie Lebour Marine Biology Research Facility & eDNA Showcase

Join the us for a unique opportunity to visit Plymouth University’s marine biology facilities, including a guided tour of the Marie Lebour Marine Biology Research Facility – one of the UK's most advanced centres for marine invertebrate research.

This is an exclusive chance for CLA members to learn how scientific innovation is supporting environmental sustainability, biodiversity monitoring, and natural capital development — all highly relevant to the future of land and coastal manage.

Marie Lebour Marine Biology Research Facility Tour

Members will enjoy a guided tour of the Marie Lebour Marine Biology Research Facility, which supports groundbreaking work in marine invertebrate research and sustainable aquaculture.

The facility features:

  • Access to both natural seawater (from Plymouth Sound) and inorganic saltwater mixes
  • Custom Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS)
  • Laboratories with temperature and light control for both temperate and tropical studies
  • A Coral Spawning Lab with thermal stress systems and tidal simulators
  • Advanced imaging equipment for developmental biology

Due to space restrictions, attendees will be split into two groups (maximum 7 people per tour).

eDNA & Metabarcoding Presentation + Refreshments

While one group tours the lab, the other will take part in an informative session about environmental DNA (eDNA) and metabarcoding — transformative techniques for assessing biodiversity, habitat health, and ecosystem services.

These technologies have significant applications for landowners engaging in Biodiversity Net Gain, nutrient neutrality, and broader natural capital projects.

Enjoy tea, coffee, and refreshments during this session and take the opportunity to ask questions.
