This festive season, alongside the usual to-do list, mince pies made or bought, presents wrapped, tree up - Rachel Reeves has added a real Christmas cracker: talk to your family about inheritance.

Many of our members will be hoping to weather the storm, and continue business as usual. However, the reality is that every family business now needs to plan - and the time to make that plan is right now. Nobody likes to talk about death, and very few enjoy discussing succession, but these conversations are essential. During our autumn/winter succession roadshows we recognised the need for additional support, which is why we are holding this webinar in the run-up to Christmas. Listen live and bring your questions or listen back at a time that works for you. Either way, we hope that this helps in approaching the conversation.

In this webinar, you will learn how to have that conversation with your family. Chaired by Eliza Ecclestone, CLA Vice President, we will be joined by experts:

  • Professor Matt Lobley, University of Exeter. A Professor of Rural Resource Management and Director of the Centre for Rural Policy Research, Matt is renowned for his extensive research and expertise in agricultural succession planning and rural business development. He is a rural social scientist and has spent the last 35 years conducting research for a variety of government, private sector and third sector clients. Matt is a leading expert on farm succession.
  • Heather Wildman is an award-winning Independent Family Succession Facilitator with over 30 years of experience helping families, businesses, and individuals navigate complex transitions. Her mission is to empower people to create clear visions, develop actionable plans, and foster open communication to achieve their goals. Rooted in her upbringing on a family farm in the Lake District and enriched by her international experience through a Nuffield Farming Scholarship, Heather brings a unique mix of agricultural expertise, strategic thinking, and a "glass-half-full" approach.

Together, they’ll share what works and what doesn’t when tackling these challenging discussions. Our goal is to help you feel prepared and confident to approach succession planning in a way that:

  • Protects relationships
  • Reduces stress
  • Helps your family plan sensibly for the future

Join us-it may be the most important item on your to-do list this year.
